When you listen to music at home, and want to really appreciate the nuances of what you are playing, there is nothing worse than your pleasure being ruined by crackling or glitches, particularly if your speaker system cost you a considerable amount of money. If you want to improve the performance of your HiFi speakers, there are a number of ways to go about it, many of which may be easier than you might think.
The first thing to look at is the placement of your speakers. It cannot be seen, but sound waves interact with a the room and its contents, so making sure speakers are not blocked or turned towards tight spaces can really make a difference to the sound produced.
The elevation of speakers is equally important. Some speakers are designed to be listened to at ear level and these should always be raised, preferably on speaker stands, but even floor speakers may well be improved by speaker spikes. In both cases, raising the speakers from the ground prevents the sound waves causing other objects in the room to vibrate and in turn affecting the overall quality of sound that is enjoyed.
Ultimately, the best way to ensure high quality sound from your speakers is to use high end speaker cables. Cables do far more than just transport a signal – their thickness, material and insulation can all seriously affect any sound produced. Any cable can suffer from interference, but the best speaker cables are much better at dealing with this and stopping it from affecting performance. As such, upgrading your speaker cables may cost money, but, for the difference you will hear in performance, it is one of the best investments you can make.
